Op-ed: On June 16 Jo Cox, 41, a Labour MP, wife and mother of two young children, was brutally murdered. Her family launched a charity page to raise funds for Jo's favourite charities. It now stands at over £1.5 million.
We launched a charity page for the have-a-go-hero Bernard Kenny who sustained serious injuries when he went to Jo's aid. But one of his sons contacted us and asked that any money raised be given to the Jo Cox charity page. This was his father's wishes.
Our page closed this week, though we put a note on about donating to Jo's page sometime ago. We donated the £80 raised yesterday to the main Jo Cox page which is still active and receiving donations.
But not everyone was moved by the murder of Jo Cox
Yorkshire Tory Councillor, Dominic Peacock, 60, has been expelled from that political party after he had been suspended earlier for posting vile comments about the fund raiser.
He has also been cautioned by police.
In June the Metro reported "A Tory councillor who said he’d donated the ‘steam off his p***’ to the Jo Cox memorial fund has been expelled by his local party. Dominic Peacock was kicked out of East Riding Council’s Conservative group for the Facebook comment posted when the fund passed the £1million mark."
"The comment, which was posted to the closed Vote Leave Beverley & Holderness, Haltemprice & Howden group, has since been deleted" but as our image above shows it cannot be eradicated.
It was during the divisive EU referendum period.
When challenged by a group member on Facebook Peacock said "I am sick and tired of this woman's death being used against the Brexit cause."
He was not present at the full meeting of the local authority in Beverley this week which sealed his fate.
Following inappropriate and offensive comments made on social media relating to the sad and tragic death of Jo Cox MP, I have suspended Cllr Dominic Peacock from the East Riding of Yorkshire Council Conservative Group with immediate effect. I shall be reporting this to a meeting of the full Group and my recommendation will be that he be expelled.
And Mr Paranaby has been true to his word.
