Warning graphic report
Op-Ed: Catching sight of a tragic image of a greyhound hung in the sun to die but so that its feet just touched the ground and it would suffer a slow painful death I was shocked.
Here we have posted on the plight of greyhounds in the UK previously but this looked different.
Following the twitter thread I found someone trying to do something to help ease the plight of greyhounds, some from Ireland that suffered terrible abuse in Ireland and in Spain.
A tweetsheet was available and so I joined in briefly although it was late in the UK and I had probably missed the timing.
GALGOARMY on Twitter sent me a link to a Daily Mail article “Horrific truth of greyhound breeding: Man’s best friend is TORTURED with cigarette burns and acid then dumped to die in tunnels, hung in trees or left with broken bones to starve to death in Spain."
There were some graphic images and please be warned a few are shown at the end of this report.
I asked GALGOARMY what I said was a daft question and it was this "why these animals are so horribly tortured."
Galgos are discarded like trash when they are aged just 2 0r 3. If they lose a race they may suffer cruelty. Greed or plain nastiness seems the reason then.
If you visit Mediterranean countries you sadly sometimes encounter animal cruelty. Dogs and cats are simply abandoned for the next young pup or kitten.
Campaigners from those countries and ex pat residents are fighting back but it is a long process. Getting animals spayed or neutered eases the ongoing problem but some countries still prefer to poison the animals.
So cruelty is nothing new but why treat these gentle and loving greyhounds in such a way? Wrong as it would be to just kill them if that was done humanely it would be a step in the right direction.
Please read the Daily Mail article which dates from January 2015 and join the campaign for change.
It is heart-breaking to read "In at least one case, a rope had become so deeply encrusted in the neck of a greyhound it had to be surgically removed by a vet while dozens of others have had gaping, open wounds – the results of abuse - by the time they are found by volunteers across Spain" and view the images but if you simply turn away as it is uncomfortable viewing and reading the terrible abuse will continue.
Knowing and understanding just how terrible greyhounds are treat in Spain and other countries gives us all a chance to make a real change.
[Rescued Galgos are sometimes available for adoption in the UK]
[Wikipedia - The Galgo Español (Spanish galgo) or Spanish greyhound is an ancient breed of dog, specifically a member of the sighthound family. The English greyhound is possibly a descendant of the Spanish greyhound and, for several years in the 20th century, some breeders did cross-breed Galgos and Greyhounds in order to produce faster and more powerful Galgos, specifically for track racing purposes}
