If the other places they travelled through did not spot the fake documents how many more would-be terrorists may have passed through border controls and into Europe or further afield?
A police spokesman, Anibal Baca, told reporters the plan was for the Syrians to fly to "Honduras' second city of San Pedro Sula with the aim of going overland through Guatemala, then Mexico and on to the United States."
There is no confirmation that the five were would-be terrorists rather than simply refugees desperate to leave Syria.
However in light of terror related events in Europe this week unauthorised travellers using fake documents are yet another cause for concern.
A suspected bomb downed a Russian plane killing all 224 on board October 31 and last weekend terrorists launched attacks in Paris which resulted in 129 deaths.
All countries involved in launching military strikes against Daesh fighters in Syria and Iraq are on high alert and considered possible targets for further terror attacks.
That could explain why these five Syrians were trying to enter the U.S.A. but it may not.
The number of desperate genuine refugees fleeing fighting in Syria continues to swell daily.
