"I know Obama got on the air and talked about gun control and I really don't believe gun control is the problem."
But as long as the issues of gun crime and in some cases mental health are simply dismissed in such a way nothing will change for the better.
With the U.S.A. looking at a statistic of one mass shooting a day in 2015 so far surely the majority of Americans can see that guns and easy access to them are the problem?
Harper-Mercer carried a British passport although his birth was registered in California. His father Ian Mercer is British, aged in his mid-50s and from the north-west of England. He is believed to have moved to America to live with the killer's mother, Laurel Harper.
The family of the killer were shocked and 'as surprised' as anyone by events his father saying Friday "Obviously, it's been a devastating day. Devastating for me and my family. I'm just as shocked as everybody at what happened today. "I've just been talking to the police and the FBI. That's all the details I have right now, is what you know already."
The shooter was enrolled in English and theatre classes at the Roseburg's Umpqua Community College and Friday initially opened fire in an English class. Early reports said he died in a gun battle with police at the scene but it was later confirmed he killed himself.
He appears to have had an obsession with the Nazis and the I.R.A. and the warning signs were visible in his postings online where he had various accounts in various names.
In the classroom the teacher was shot in the head and students were asked their religion before they were killed; the killer appears to have targeted Christians say some reports.
The shooter had a history of mental health problems, had previously attended a special needs education facility and joined the army in 2008 but was discharged after one-month.
13 firearms were found at the college and at Harper-Mercer's apartment. All were purchased legally-not a gun problem then?
He killed two and injured at least six others; one remains in a critical condition.
Police have found wigs and other items which appear to indicate Houser planned to launch his deadly attack in the cinema, leave and then escape the county in disguise.
However police responded quickly to the mass shooting which meant Houser was forced back into the movie theatre where he took his own life.
USA Today reports "Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal spoke emotionally from the scene, hailing the first responders." I want to praise the law enforcers who ran toward danger," Jindal said. "This is a time for us to come together. What we can do now is pray. We can hug these families, shower them with love, thoughts and prayers." "This is an awful night for Lafayette, an awful night for Louisiana, an awful night for the United States," a sombre Jindal said."
Opinion: Having written on so many shootings in the USA in the few years I have been writing online I wonder how many more will die before the people and politicians of the United States have the stomach for real change.
To those who wonder why this man opened fire is the answer 'because he could'?
There is big money in weapons manufacture and sales but at what price?
To those across the Pond who insist owning a weapon keeps you safe I can only say 'tell that to the many victims'.

US gun crime
President Obama has faced some criticism after making a moving and emotional speech following the killings. He has been criticised for centring on the trouble with guns in the USA and not the race issue. But the latter could easily fan the flames of racial hatred and be self-defeating.
As Roof reportedly wanted to start a new race war it could have also played into his hands.
But Saturday President Obama faced the race-card head on saying "Racism remains "a blight" on society" reports BBC News.
Trying once again to address America's gun issues could and should lead to positive change. But that will take the will of the people and right now too many in the USA are still in love with their guns and it is a bog money-making industry.
In late 2012 a shooter killed 20 children and 6 adults at a Connecticut School, in the USA, before killing himself. Many words were written and spoken following that tragedy but little changed regarding guns in real terms.
Some gun proponents opted to believe that Sandy Hook did not happen and it was a government staged event to cut gun possession in the USA.
As an English woman I find it both crazy and sad that Roof was bought his gun for his 21st birthday months ago. Is that the best gift a loved one can come up with? Is that the most wanted gift as you traditionally enter manhood? If the answer to both is yes we are all doomed.
A friend of Roof's told the Daily News he had taken the .45 Glock away from Roof two weeks ago after Roof went on a drunken, bigoted rant about segregation and killing people. His friend also said he had been planning 'something big' for months.
All the warning signs were there but ignored.
He had allegedly considered turning the gun on himself after the murders but instead went on the run briefly.
Those killed at the bible class Wednesday were aged between 27 and 87.
Roof has reportedly confessed to the killings and has made his first court appearance.
Friday he listened to victims' families as he appeared via video link at his bond hearing. ABC reports "I forgive you,” the daughter of victim Ethel Lance said through tears. “You hurt me, you hurt a lot of people.” Felicia Sanders, the mother of the slain Tywanza Sanders, said, "We welcomed you Wednesday night in our bible study with open arms."
"Every fiber in my body hurts," Sanders said. "And I'll never be the same. Tywanza Sanders was my son. But he was my hero. But as we said at bible study, may God have mercy on you." He showed no emotion.
He could face the death penalty in South Carolina.
Perhaps the most fitting sentence will be a whole-life term in jail. That could after all be a living death and give this young man plenty of time to consider his murderous activity and bigotry.
