Sperm donors receive a £35 fee per visit but it is not about making money. Donors are screened and must meet the criteria which includes being aged between 18 and 40.
The national sperm bank plans to begin shipping sperm to clinics in January but is striggling to meet demand.
Increasing the fee is not an option for various reasons.
The national sperm bank is now considering a new donor campaign aimed at the traditional alpha male by appealing to a man's vanity and virility.
As the Guardian reports "Laura Witjens, the chief executive, says the sperm bank will launch a drive to recruit new donors later in September, inspired by the success of Denmark’s booming sperm banks which market themselves by appealing to male vanity.
“If I advertised saying ‘Men, prove your worth, show me how good you are’, then I would get hundreds of donors,” she said. “That’s the way the Danish do it. They proudly say, this is the Viking invasion, exports from Denmark are beer, Lego and sperm. It’s a source of pride.”
But British men are not Danes.
There may be some genetic similarities from earlier Nordic invasions but are British and Danish men similar enough for such a campaign to work?
Traditionally a man's 'sexual prowess' was a source of pride but what about new age men?
I guess probably the answer is a man is a man is a man when all is said and done.
So men of Great Britain your country needs you-will you respond to the call?
