The decision for the timing of the election of the next president will be up to the executive committee and will take place any time from December until March."
But many are speculating as to why Blatter has finally quit and what other skeletons may be in the FIFA cupboard.
The full transcript of Sepp Blatter’s statement follows:
I have been reflecting deeply about my presidency and about the 40 years in which my life has been inextricably bound to Fifa and the great sport of football. I cherish Fifa more than anything and I want to do only what is best for Fifa and for football. I felt compelled to stand for re-election, as I believed that this was the best thing for the organisation. That election is over but Fifa’s challenges are not. Fifa needs a profound overhaul.
Was that buying votes or taking the game to countries that would otherwise be excluded?
If FIFA is guilty as accused it is not a new state of affairs. Do we smell a rat as far as the USA goes and the fact the next host country of the World Cup scheduled for 2018 is Russia? Is it more about preventing Russia host the next World Cup?
Qatar, World Cup hosts for 2022, is also back in the spotlight. Was their successful bid dodgy? The timing of the World Cup had to be changed due to temperatures in Qatar in June. Qatar is accused of a series of allegations including corruption and the plight of migrant workers.
According to CBS "In a 2014 report, the International Trade Union Confederation estimated (PDF) that 1,200 World Cup workers have died since Qatar was named host in 2010."
If something is rotten inside FIFA is that more than old news?
