Some of his victims were prostitutes; others just in the wrong place and at the wrong time.
Families of the victims, including their children, were left distraught.
Sutcliffe mutilated the bodies and operated in Yorkshire leading to the nickname the Yorkshire Ripper.
His means of operating harked back to 19th Century killer Jack the Ripper and that led to a terrible error on the part of police working on the case.
A rogue recording was sent to police; made by a man with a Geordie accent it led police astray. They became positive they were looking for a man with this accent.
The recording 'I'm Jack' convinced all-Wearside Jack as he was later called, John Samuel Humble, also sent letters to police claiming he as the Yorkshire Ripper. But it was all a hoax.
Time caught up with Humble and DNA proved he was the hoaxer. In 2006 he was sentenced to eight years in jail. His time wasting cost lives when police changed the direction of their investigation.
Sutcliffe was interviewed by police at least once but not charged.
The killing spree continued for at least five-years until he was caught in 1981;
On 2 January 1981, Sutcliffe was stopped by the police with 24-year-old prostitute Olivia Reivers in the driveway of Light Trades House, Melbourne Avenue, Broomhill, Sheffield in South Yorkshire. A police check revealed the car was fitted with false number plates and Sutcliffe was arrested and transferred to Dewsbury Police Station, West Yorkshire. At Dewsbury he was questioned in relation to the Yorkshire Ripper case as he matched many of the known physical characteristics. The next day police returned to the scene of the arrest and discovered a knife, hammer and rope he had discarded when he briefly slipped away from the police after telling them he was "bursting for a pee". Sutcliffe had hidden a second knife in the toilet cistern at the police station when he was permitted to use the toilet - Wikipedia
Sutcliffe is expected to be transferred to HM prison Wakefield, dubbed 'monsters mansion'.
It means Sutcliffe will be back in Yorkshire but it is a tough prison with some of the meanest inmates around.
Sutcliffe is now on suicide watch apparently-he does not want to be moved to a high security prison.
Well tough-I doubt his victims wanted to encounter the Yorkshire Ripper but sadly they did and paid the ultimate price.
