The uniform trousers aimed at desexualising pupils
A row has erupted at a school in Bridlington, Yorkshire, but it could be just the tip of the iceberg.
Days ago the school banned female pupils for wearing skirts and the backlash continues.
Girls attending the school will now have to wear trousers emblazoned with the correct badge. Some parents have complained about the additional cost although the ruling has had some support.
According to a report in the Telegraph days ago the ban follows "an incident when a male teacher was told 'You shouldn't be looking at my legs' by a girl he was telling of."
That report continues by claiming one reason for the ban is that male teachers are too embarrassed to tell girl pupils off regarding the length of hemlines.
The new dresscode bans girls from wearing skirts but we wondered if the same would apply to boys. If not perhaps they could make a stand in support of fellow girl pupils.
The school’s headteacher Sarah Pashley sent out a letter saying "To set it in context, on one occasion when a male member of staff challenged a female student on her skirt length, she retorted, “You shouldn’t be looking at my legs”. The male member of staff was understandably uncomfortable with this and reported it to me immediately."
She did however admit that there was still a problem with some girls who pushed the boundaries by wearing overly tight trousers.
It sounds more like Pashley has a problem with the men at her school than the girl pupils. Will female members of staff be allowed to wear skirts?
Surely the pupil's education is paramount?
Certainly some skirts are incredibly short these days but more often than not such a skirt is worn with thick black tights resembling leggings.
This story takes me back to my teenage years at school when uniform rules were broken on a daily basis and hemlines got higher all the time. And at that time girls were not allowed to wear trousers at school.
But perhaps teachers in those days were made of sterner stuff.
The girls will all be expected to wear the same style of trousers now but how long will it be before one pair and then another is tweaked.
An online petition gathered more than 1,000 signatures and parents are attending a meeting at the school Tuesday to discuss a way forward.
