Two cars were involved in the shooting but it quickly emerged that the men in the Golf may be wanted by police in connection with a separate firearms incident.
Shoppers who witnessed events unfold were shocked. One, Steve Sowerby, 50, told the Hull Daily Mail he "had been to B&Q to buy a bed with his partner and son, when the drama unfolded at 11.35am on Saturday." He was shocked to see armed police that sped to the scene cops point their guns at the heads of the two men to get them out of the car.
The two men were later released from custody.
Police have since raided houses in West Hull and made a series of arrests.
Some of the raids are not related to the shooting.
Police are still piecing together events.
Opinion: Hull has a drug problem and that could be a feature. It does not need a gun problem.
