At one time the advice to tourists visiting some countries around the Med was do not go topless or show too much flesh unless you can stand a great deal of male attention. The locals in some places would blatantly ogle the women and it was a case of if you 'can't stand the heat don't go into the kitchen'.
In 2015 in many Mediterranean and western countries there are designated nudist beaches and females going topless on other beaches are the norm.
This week the so-called British naked rambler, Stephen Gough, made a historic appearance in court via a video-link and true to himself he was naked; Gough was the first person to appear naked in court. A carefully positioned table hid those parts of his body that might cause offence.
He was in court to appeal his latest jail sentence.
The Guardian reporting from the court said "A lawyer representing him in court argued that the conviction for breaching an antisocial behaviour order (asbo) - by walking out of prison wearing only his boots and socks - was unsafe because he was not permitted to stand trial “not wearing any clothes”." That led to the naked video link court appearance.
Serving an earlier jail term Gough, 56, had refused to put on clothes and was re-arrested.
Nudists or naturists tend to wear clothes most of the time but Gough is a naked activist full-time.
Former Royal Marine Stephen Gough says it is his human right to be naked as and when he wants. He has been in trouble with the law for his behaviour and is in jail for breaching an ASBO, anti-social behaviour order, banning his naked rambling.
"Gough earned his nickname when he completed a naked trek from Land’s End to John O’Groats in 2003 and he featured in a BBC documentary covering his journey." He completed the journey again in 2005-2006 but was arrested and has been in and out of trouble with the law ever since.
In essence he is facing life in prison unless he gives in and puts some clothes on.
In 2014 one judge said one solution could be to find a naked closed-community where Gough could live but would he play ball?
As it stands Mr. Gough will ultimately be released and re-arrested in true Groundhog Day fashion until death.
In October 2014 he was sentenced to a further two and a half years in prison. On October 28, 2014, the European Court of Human Rights ruled that European laws protecting privacy and freedom of expression did not apply to Gough's naked rambling - Wikipedia
