The male candidates gave the event their best shot at winning over supporters but Trump acted as a loose cannon.
In the end when challenged whether he would support another candidate if they won the leadership race he failed to step up to the mark. Instead he seemed keener to go it alone and create a new party with him at the helm.
Being so brutally honest in such a televised debate is not good political sense and could act as the kiss of death to his G.O.P hopes.
But then there was his actual performance to consider.
Little wonder Saturday Reuters is reporting "Trump dumped from conservative event in Atlanta over 'inappropriate' comments."
Trump had attacked Foxs News anchor Megyn Kelly after the debate.
What appears to have resulted in Trump's Atlanta event snub is this reported at CNN- "Trump slammed Kelly, saying "she is a lightweight. I couldn't care less about her." "You could see there was blood coming out of her eyes," Trump told CNN's Don Lemon on Friday night. "Blood coming out of her wherever."
It was the straw that broke the camel's back.
"Red State chief Erick Erickson said he had disinvited Trump from the event because of what he described as "demeaning" remarks about Kelly who was one of three moderators during the first major Republican debate on Thursday night in Cleveland.” While I have tried to give him great latitude, his remark about Megyn Kelly was a bridge too far," Erickson said, adding he had invited Kelly, one of Fox's highest profile anchors, to attend his conference in Trump's place."
Trump is unmoved by the snub saying "This is just another example of weakness through being politically correct," his campaign said in a statement. "For all of the people who were looking forward to Mr. Trump coming, we will miss you. Blame Erick Erickson, your weak and pathetic leader. We'll now be doing another campaign stop at another location."
When challenged by Kelly about previous comments he made about women being 'fat-pigs' he simply tried to brush her aside in true male chauvinist fashion.
Fox News is the American version of the Sun in the U.K. labelled correctly as right-wing supporting media so he was not up against a political enemy.
Trump appears to have a long way to go if he truly wants political success. He needs to learn how to be diplomatic not just bombastic.
It is hard to imagine Trump settled in the White House with his finger on the 'button' but stranger things have happened.
The late former President Ronald Reagan may now he viewed respectfully through rose-coloured glasses but who would have believed a B movie actor could have had that role?
Trump has enough money to cure numerous world problems but aged 69 has opted for a stab at a political career. Whether he is serious or just passing time he has the money to support a campaign and little to lose as he is already a figure of fun to many.
24 million viewers reportedly tuned in to the debate.
