There was never any doubt that Holmes was the killer but the debate surrounded his state of mind and intent.
12 people were killed in the cinema rampage and in July Holmes was found guilty of all 165 charges against him; he faced two counts of first degree murder for each of the victims he fatally shot, and then two counts of attempted murder for each of the 70 others who were injured but survived.
The victims of this mass shooting include the family of James Holmes. His Mom made a plea for his life in court and she wept when he was saved from a death sentence.
"A statement issued by a spokesperson for Holmes' family following the sentencing read: "The Holmes family is unable to make any comment at this time other than to say that they are deeply sorry this has happened and they are so sorry that the victims and families have suffered such tremendous loss"" reports ABC News.
His legal team have always maintained the shooting was due to psychotic breakdown suffered by a mentally ill.
