Statement from New Brighton Lifeboat Crew Press Release – On behalf of the 12 recently dismissed New Brighton Lifeboat Crew We the former crew members at New Brighton Lifeboat Station would like to make the following statement as the RNLI have been putting out information in a way that hides the truth. Firstly we need to make the public aware that our first concern has always been the safety of the public - that is why we gave our time, dedication and passion to the RNLI. We would go to sea right now despite the way we have been treated if we were called upon. We are proud of our station which has been in existence since 1863 and we were proud to be part of the RNLI. Our dispute is with individuals within that organisation who do not seem to care about our issues. There is no issue over training. There was an issue last year regarding the way a new training regime was implemented (which has failed miserably) but training has been ongoing at the station. The RNLI have told the media that there are 12 crew members who have refused to sign a form that was put before us. They have stated that 16 have signed. What they have failed to explain is that they are counting non seagoing personnel in their figures. The number of sea going crew who have signed is 8. The majority of these are quite new to the station. In October 2015 there were 25 operational crew. Seventeen of the 25 signed a collective grievance which was submitted to the RNLI. This covered a number of issues including the fact that the senior Helmsman (the most senior sea going person on the lifeboat) was forced to resign as part of a deliberately orchestrated plot by the Lifeboat Operations Manager (LOM) supported by paid staff from the RNLI. Despite providing emails, statements, transcripts and verbal accounts, the matter was not investigated correctly. The RNLI had breached their own policies and so the grievance was dismissed to cover up their own incompetence. Complaints of bullying and derogatory comments made about crew were even covered up. That resulted in 8 crew members resigning. They were crew members with decades of experience including a Hovercraft Commander with nearly 25 years’ service. So out of the 25 crew there were only 17 left. Of those left a number were relatively new and inexperienced. The lifeboat and hovercraft were off service for long periods of time due to lack of crew (that means not available to carry out a rescue). This was never revealed to the public. The Lifeboat Operations Manager (LOM) then started to recruit more people to make the numbers up. In the main good well-meaning individuals but with no experience. Things did not improve at the station. The Lifeboat Operations Manager (LOM) was not really trusted by the crew. There was resentment at the way he seemed to favour a couple of individuals over the rest of the crew and his actions did nothing to repair the damage. Recently the crew were asked to sign a form that most had signed when they joined. No other lifeboat crew around the coast were asked to sign the form. No reasonable explanation was given as to why we should sign the form. Questions were asked about it but not answered. It was hinted that it was to show commitment which was insulting because we were all committed to saving lives at sea. How did the RNLI deal with the mess they created? Simple, sack the crew and close the station, hoping that the matter will just go away and be forgotten about. Unfortunately for them they are dealing with a group who are passionate about saving lives at sea and do not want the public to be put at risk. The RNLI state that public safety will not be affected by the closure of New Brighton Lifeboat Station, our nearest station is Hoylake, who are a fantastic crew with a state of the art boat, however, they cannot get around the coast quick enough in an emergency, New Brighton Lifeboat, until recent months could be in the water within 10 minutes, only last year a number of youngsters were saved who had minutes to live, imagine searching for a swimmer and only seeing a hand sticking out of the water, this youngster is alive because of the skill and dedication of that crew as well as their quick response. We also have a hovercraft which can save people from mud. The next nearest hovercraft is at Morecambe. We the former crew members want the public realise that there is a lot more to this story than they are being told and we only hope that the truth eventually comes out so we can go back to doing what we have been doing so well for many decades, saving lives at sea and being there to protect your family’s 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. There has been over 300 years of experience lost from the station in the last 10 months, this has either come as a result of crew being “removed” from the crew or they have resigned as they were not able to work under a management that is quite frankly ill-informed and not capable of carry out the task of running a lifeboat station. These events have come about as a result of a conflict of personality between management and the Senior Crew who did not agree with the way they and the rest of the station were being treated. It soon became apparent that there was a clearly evidenced scheme to get rid of the experienced crew, this was well documented and the RNLI were a part of this. There was no reason to remove these crew, they were and still are the experience that meant that every time the lifeboat went to sea it had a well-trained and effective crew. Now that 20 crew members have been removed from the station, there are now 5 that remain, not the majority that the RNLI would have the public believe. http://www.pbo.co.uk/news/new-brighton-lifeboat-station-temporarily-off-service-38754

Follow the example of the rescue service down here in Chepstow, the big boys started playing silly buggers so a group of volunteers set up SARA (Severn Area Rescue Association) a voluntary non profit organization it's gone from strength to strength now with 6 rescue vessels, a mountain rescue unit and four stations covering the Wye and Severn from Tewksbury to Cardiff. Time for a MARA off shoot me thinks

As the hovercraft was paid for by a Mrs Hurley and donated to the institute under the direction that it be used for the safety and well being of the local community, a directive the RLNI are now in breach of, is it legally feesable for the crew to take possession of the vessel and set up a new voluntary rescue service on the river, bearing the fact that the RLNI didn't actually pay anything for it in the first place. The original benefactor must be livid hearing how her generosity is being squandered.

Our crew at St Abbs were treated just as shabbily by the RNLI High Command.

Very true words Euan. Shame on the RNLI once again. As an ex lifeboat crew member I was disgusted at the closure of St Abbs Lifeboat Station but this is now served by a privately funded boat and equally dedicated crew.

Simon,we have just taken delivery of our new independently funded lifeboat to replace the one the RNLI took after closing our station. We have moved on,and need to close the book on what was a sorry chapter in the proud history of lifesaving out of St Abbs.Pretty much everything we countered the RNLI with is in the Public Domain, and while some issues are not,we don't feel anything would be gained by opening old wounds....

Im shocked and appalled as a senior sailing member of the public who regularly donates and holds the RNLI in the highest regard. This need to be brought to the public attention URGENTLY around the country and STOP this arrogance and 'Old Boys Club' behaviour!! PLEASE start a petition for an investigation into the running of the RNLI...and my eternal thanks to all the dedicated RNLI crew around the UK !

I am part of the St Abbs crew mentioned above and my deepest sympathies go out to you all. Euan has mentioned, we have also had to endure the half truths and spin from the RNLI PR machine. Thankfully we have now come out the other side stronger and better than before, there is life after the RNLI. If you really feel that your station has been closed unnecessarily then stay strong and fight your corner lads i wish you all the very best best with your efforts and remember that the reputation of the RNLI was built off the backs of people like you and not retired royal navy officers that want to run a charity like a business.

not to mention the salaries of the said "high command" It's about time the public were made aware of how much these people get paid. I am ex crew, just before i retired, we were forced to "patch" drysuits that had rips & tears in them instead of getting new ones "because of cost"

As a ex crew man off 15 years that giving your free time maintaining your boat and boat house turning out when your pager sounds helping out with fundraising visits to lifeboat station is not enough enymore for RNLI sorry to see New Brighton crew split like this as for some at Poole if they can stand by and see what was a fantastic body of people to be involed with just ignored let. hope some one at top will change this before to late

Please put the link for the petition out on Facebook wherever you can, there are thousands of us who will support you and sign it. Hold firm boys and lets hope calm waters follow soon.

Seems like a simple solution to this would be for this so called Manager and I use the term Manager half jokingly as he seems from all accounts to be a waste of space and him being there is only going to risk the lives of people and cost the RNLI damage to their name and to the donations they receive from members of the public like me.

As the Headteacher of a Wirral school who regularly fundraiser for both the New Brighton and Hoylake stations, I am extremely concerned at this report. We shall not longer be putting our efforts into this charity until clarification is received as to whether the funds raised are actually being used to save lives rather than pay the wages of a tin pot dictator such as this L.O.M!

Thank you Rob, I can assure you that all of the correct grievance and subsequent appeal procedures, evidence, transcripts, emails and statements were all provided to the organisation including voice recordings which would have stood up in any court in the land during this investigation. Without interviewing crew members we received a headed letter shortly after to say the issue was resolved. 17/24 crew lodged this grievance yet it was not investigated to any standard an employer would find appropriate. No official figure from the RNLI wish to speak to us even after 300 years of joint service have been lost to this station. We feel very silenced and so many questions unanswered, no respect given to us is very hurtful. We all still respect the role of saving lives at sea and to all volunteers that remain.

I appreciate that every station has politics, and 100% truth of every circumstance will never be known by all parties, all I can do is reiterate that in my humble experience, I have NEVER witnessed this Navy old boys network - I am also ex-RN.

Looks like the Lifeboat Operations Manager is the root cause to all these issues and should be subject to disciplinary action in the form of his removal ASAP to enable the experienced lifeboat crews to resume their duties to the public of Wirral and surrounding areas.

This smacks of total lack of management capabilities, shiny arses with much less brain power than the dedicated life boat crews who know exactly what they are doing to protect those in danger. The hierarchy needs a totally good investigation by independents and those who bring the organisation into disrepute should be booted out. The public donations pays this/these persons so we should all stop until the organisation weeds out who ever it is who is telling porky pies and wrecking peoples lives.

I have just noticed that the petition was rejected by the Government as its not their business. Can I suggest that a petition is raised for submission to Lifeboat HQ. I know that there are many thousands of people would sign this, all of who would normally be contributing money or helping raise money for the RNLI. Do let me know if you decide to do this and I will do all I can to help.

Just a thought, how about if every one wrote to thier own MP (no matter where in the country you live) informing them that you intend to go sailing with a friend within the area that you cover and ask them for an assurance in writting that the RNLI can respond fully from New Bighton in the event of an emergency.

That this sad dispute ever happened in the first place is, perhaps, just human nature. That it has been allowed to drag on is a scandal, and is robbing New Brighton of the much needed sacrificial and experienced skills of the Lifeboat station crew. It needs sorting and it needs sorting now, before a life is lost.
