Help eliminate puppy mills

There should be some special retribution for those who profit by inflicting pain on others. A large puppy mill in the Fraser Valley of British Columbia has been raided and 66 dogs have been seized. The conditions for these unfortunates have been described as deplorable. But that doesn’t properly sum up the suffering that these animals have endured.

The SPCA spokesperson has described the puppy mill operation as sophisticated and extensive. The couple named as the land owners in this case – Glen and Maria Lawlor – also have a daughter who was prosecuted and banned from owning dogs while she was living in Washington State. Global TV has reported that she and her husband are currently living in another Fraser Valley town – Chilliwack.

Both puppies and adult dogs were in poor condition. The local SPCA has moved out its healthy animals and has quarantined its facility because of infestations of ringworm(a fungal infection), roundworms and giardia infections. In addition the animals are reported to be suffering injuries ranging from broken bones to missing eyes.

Advertising for special and expensive puppies has been extensive on line. Both the Facebook entries and multiple webpage addresses now sport unable to locate notices. Following are a couple of copies of the type of advertising that these cruel people have used.

If you choose to buy a dog from a breeder, thinking that they are lovely people and that they live on a great piece of property that is ideal for a kennel, think twice. I once worked with a man by the same name. We taught school together in Langley. He appeared normal and hardworking. Do your homework. Ask to see the parents of any puppy you are considering. Open your eyes to the real conditions of the animals.

Never buy a puppy from a pet store. They are far too often obtained from such hellish places.

We need proper legislation to get these heartless breeders out of business and into jail. There are too many horrific stories.

Rescue dogs can make great pets and adult dogs not just puppies.

Too often animal suffering goes hand in hand when puppies are bred for a business.

I am the Son of one of the accused in this case. I strongly support animal rights, and I agree with the public in regards to profits and raising animals - especially pets! I urge people to do homework before buying a puppy (See the parents before buying + more). And also urge each of you to do your homework before believing the sensationalism of the Media. Perhaps demand that the Editors of every media outlet covering this case - read the medical reports from the Police / SPCA before publicizing their articles.

I have witnessed many of my neighbours growing up, having animals seized under accusations of abuse. Often, the SPCA targets individuals purely on a basis of how many animals they have, and if they have payed the Kennel fees / permits required by law that give the SPCA revenue. It often has little to do with the actual protection of animals in 'distress' (Just look at the BCSPCA FB page and see the cases where the SPCA ignore reports of abuse / spend hundreds of thousands suing other animal protection organizations).

Though I did see the state of affairs during the most recent years at the 6 acre property where my Mother raised dogs for many years, I know for a fact that many of the allegations that were made, were completely false, embellished or exaggerated.

I am not saying puppy Mills don't really exist BTW. I am saying that the SPCA target "puppymills" not on a basis of the conditions for the dogs, but on a condition of whether the case is large enough to create a huge story over. Just look on the BC-SPCA FB page and see the complaints from people who reported animal abuse for weeks without response from the SPCA.

My Mother loves animals and many of the dogs on the property were in the family for 6-7 generations. The first dog I ever had at 16 was the great great grandmother of my current dog.

The un-hygenic, emotionally / physically harmful conditions that resulted for some of the dogs, came about due to 20 dog's being dropped off on the property. The quantity of animals exceeded my parents means. At that point it became impossible to properly care for the additional dogs. I suppose they should have simply called the SPCA on themselves and given up the whole business at that point.

It's too bad the SPCA were not interested in helping people provide safe and healthy kennel conditions. Instead what they do, is target people and criminalize them.

The result of this flooding of my Mother's Kennel. was that the dogs that were dropped off ended up in the Garage, without heating (newly constructed building) and were not provided adequate hygiene, or love.

REGARDING THE ALLEGATIONS on the INTERNET =
There was ONE dog that was missing an eye. He had lost an eye from puppyhood when his mother accidentally stepped on his head. This type of thing sometimes happens.

The truth is (as known by every large / small farm owner) is that parasites, infections and medical issues are simply part of owning animals.

There were no dogs with missing ears. No dogs with missing limbs (that was embellished from my Sister's dogs in Washington). There were a few with Ringworms (which is a frequent issue with dogs). All the dogs were dewormed every 2 months. All the dogs were fed home cooked organic meals their whole lives. All the dogs were walked twice a day. All the dogs were given medical treatment promptly when needed. All the animals came with health Guarantees.
1 litter had major parasite issues. The whole litter ended up dying except one. It was a huge tragedy. The one that survived was dewormed and seemed to be fine as reported, the puppy ended up dying terribly after being sold.

Perhaps the SPCA are right and I along with dog buyers had the wool pulled over my eyes. But please let the courts do their job in identifying real Puppy Mills. And if you all want to help in the movement please find out for yourself before accusing people.

In finishing, I want to re-iterate that I believe that Dog's rights need to defended.
I also believe that the rights of our fellow human beings are worth defending.

The members of my family that have been accused deserve a fair trial just like every Canadian. They also deserve the opportunity to be heard. They have already been tried and convicted in the "Court of Public Opinion" (The MEDIA). I think this form of "Social Justice" is dangerous and threatens the fabric of our Constitution.

Their personal names, Photos, photos of our Family Home / Address has been publicized along with Allegations that have not seen the light of our Justice System.

Do we really want to go back to the System of Public Hanging, as a society.
