Unemployment currently stands at 24%.
The violence has had a knock on effect in the rest of the continent. Some employers are making preparations to repatriate S. African workers to avoid reprisal attacks. Malawi has called for a boycott of S. African goods and shopkeepers there have been threatened.
S. Africa has a long and troubled history of hostilities against those perceived to be foreign. Shortly after democratization in 1994 riots blamed on Bantu hostilities to immigrants from other areas of Africa and Europe. Riots in 2008 killed more people. 2013 and 2014 thugs killed Somali immigrants and looted their properties.
