The Iranian government has announced that it is planning to spend USD$ 6 million to restore the lake. It has reached tentative agreement with Azerbaijan and Georgia to increase the water flow into the lakebed. The UN has placed a USD$25 million price tag on the job. The Aral Sea in the former Soviet Union has been choked of its water supply by poorly planned and maintained irrigation systems. The drainage area is now shared by five countries. Indonesia is part of the Ring of Fire around the Pacific Ocean. It has 129 active volcanos on its many islands. Most volcanos occur where tectonic plates are moving and diving underneath an adjacent plate. Indonesia has the dubious distinction of sitting on or adjacent to three major plates – the Eurasian, Pacific and Australian. In 2014 another volcano erupted, causing 100 thousand people to flee. The Boxing Day tsunami in 2004 was a result of tectonic plates shifting. That disaster killed an estimated 230 thousand. Sources: Canberra Times Wikipedia The World Anti-doping Agency(WADA) has been investigating allegations that the Russian sportsworld has entrenched and widespread cheating. The investigation began December 2014 and has prompted the organization to recommend that the International Association of Athletics Foundation impose sanctions on the Russian athletes as well as remove the accreditation of the Moscow based testing facility. In a media event, the chair of the independent commission to investigate persistent rumours of institutionalized doping, Dick Pound was quoted: It's pretty disturbing," Pound said. "It's worse than we thought." CBC Sports The commission has recommended that Russia be declared “non-compliant” with the current anti-doping rules. They particularly focussed on the track and field athletes and stated that they hoped that the doping could be cleaned up before the Rio Olympics in 2016. The comprehensive report touched on many aspects of sport in Russia. The following are a few of the pertinent points.
Many of us have witnessed the long standing investigation into doping allegations that swirled around cycling great Lance Armstrong. His performances in the Tour de France were truly amazing, but it turns out years later that he admitted to cheating. Other cycling stars have stated that during those ‘doping days’ that you couldn’t touch the podium without doping. Armstrong had his TDF wins expunged from the record books. It is shameful that those in charge of young athletes would expose them to life altering chemicals in the quest for a dubious national glory. The cheaters in turn rob the ‘clean’ athletes of their rightful recognition and while they are classed as amateurs, rob them of the lucrative contracts offered to gold medal winners. The search for a cancer cure led Doctor William Coley to investigate the relationship between bacterial infection and cancer remission. Dr. Coley practised medicine in New York City. In his search he found several anecdotal reports of remissions after a fever or infection. In 1891 he injected a patient with a streptococcal bacterium. The cure didn’t work on all his patients, but for those with bone cancer, remission often happened. Coley’s toxins acquired popularity for a short while, but documentation and follow up was sometimes lacking. Newer therapies like chemotherapy and radiation were gaining popularity and by the time he retired in 1933 the therapy was all but abandoned. Now sophisticated new techniques are building on Coley’s foundation of immunotherapy. Sources: News Science Magazine US National Library of Medicine |
