And the fact that most people are prepared to believe it could have happened must say something about PM Cameron and his ilk?
Wednesday this story and its fall out rumbles on. The Independent reports "David Cameron compares Lord Ashcroft dead pig claims to a 'stab in the back' as war of words continues PM uses joke to take a swipe at Lord Ashcroft's new book, likening claims made in Call Me Dave to going to the doctor with 'a little prick' in the back." That sadly says it all about our Prime Minister. "The war of words between David Cameron and Lord Ashcroft has continued, with the Prime Minister reportedly comparing the former Tory deputy chairman's claims of widespread drug-taking and obscene sexual behaviour in his youth to "a stab in the back." But that does not like an 'innocent' man does it? Either way the Daily Mail is making big money out of Call Me Dave. Guardian - How do you deal with a story like #piggate? That animal's owner, pig farmer Jing Guanglan, decided the birth of that little piggy was a good luck sign; he chose to embrace its birth by classing the creature as a good luck charm and money-maker.
Just how he decided on the good luck is not clear. It could be a lucky break for the pig though who may escape a deadly kitchen fate. However the two-headed pig was more like a conjoined creature and struggled to survive from day one. Guanglan however could only see the poor creature as a cash creator that would attract publicity at a price. Sadly deformed creatures are popular in Chin and can be big money-spinners although their lifespan tends to be brief. According to the Daily Mirror "Experts say the male piglet has a rare genetic defect that only affects one in 100,000." Its owner ignored the fact that the poor creature could hardly move about as its two-heads are such a weight. The two-headed pig was born with four eyes and two snouts. Are these strange mutant animal births specific to China? If so could it be down to how they are raised and fed? If so what does that tell us about the creatures that appear normal and survive before being killed for food across the world? After all, we are what we eat! pDo you sometimes feel like a headless chicken? You know what that means-running around blindly getting nowhere fast. That common saying has its roots in fact. And fact is sometimes stranger than fiction. Chickens have been known to have some life after head loss but Thursday a story about a headless chicken that lived a further 18 months is amazing, shocking, sad and grotesque. According to the story it happened 70 years ago today in Colorado in the USA. Before you dismiss the story as nonsense the decapitated bird became famous and was called 'Mike'. It was September 10, 1945, when a farming couple, Lloyd Olsen and his wife Clara, were killing birds-Lloyd was the executioner chopping the birds' heads off and Clara faced the task of cleaning what was left. But 'Mike' refused to give up the ghost and the Olsens decided to help him live
According to the family the headless chicken was "placed in an old apple box on the farm's screened porch for the night" and was still alive and kicking the following morning. Although most of the chicken's head was in a jar, most of his brain stem and one ear was left on his body. Since most of a chicken's reflex actions are controlled by the brain stem Mike was able to remain quite healthy-Mike the headless chicken. The rooster quickly became a legend in its own lifetime. Taken up by a travelling sideshow its fame quickly spread. Stories include university scientists removing the heads of many other chickens to see if any others survived; well it was 1945 / 1946. But even at that time 'Mike's popularity and that of his owners was not universal and one compared the Olsens to Nazis. If you are wondering how the chicken was sustained the owners dropped liquid food and water straight into his oesophagus. Tragedy struck, or was it a blessing, when the syringe used to clean mucus from his 'throat' was not to hand. Mike choked to death. Mike survived the initial beheading when a blood clot formed and stopped the bird bleeding to death. The lucky or unlucky cut depending on your point of view enabled life to continue. For the Olsens, a poor farming family, Mike was a financial success at least in the short term.
