But one thing is certain and that is selectively choosing some languages and excluding others is not in the spirit of a brave new world.
It could simply be that the Arabic language is associated with current conflicts and acts of terrorism but dig a little into history and many languages would be excluded.
England and the USA may claim to have a special bond these days but history tells a different story.
As BBC News reports neither the USA nor New York State have an official language. With such a melting pot of nationalities making up the country many languages have links to the USA.
But at least for now Arabic it seems is a language too far.
An apology has been made and a vow to only ever read the pledge in English from now on followed.
The school district superintendant, Joan Carbone, told the Times Herald-Record newspaper that the Arabic pledge had "divided the school in half" and that she had received numerous complaints.
